On 15 August 2021, Kabul fell to the Taliban. France launched Operation Apagan
Several thousand particularly threatened people are evacuated by the French government.
Once in France, many of these Afghans applied to Ofpra for asylum.
Between the start of the operation and the end of the first half of 2023, more than 4,000 asylum applications were lodged by people with profiles less typical among Afghan asylum seekers: journalists, artists, legal professionals or former members of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) accompanied by their families.
In addition, at the end of the first half of 2023, asylum applications from Afghan minors, which have been rising steadily since 2015, accounted for 62.7% of all applications from unaccompanied minors, while women accounted for 22% of Afghan applications.
